Outrage in Gakoe Village: Women Demand Justice and Security after Attack on Elderly Woman Amid Rising Insecurity.
Women from Gakoe Village in Githunguri Sub-County stormed Giatheko Police Station after an older woman was attacked early in the morning while taking milk to a nearby dairy port. The women, expressing their frustrations, accused the Giatheko police officers of being reluctant to combat illicit brews and drugs, which they say have contributed to insecurity in the area.
Hannah Njeri, a 69-year-old woman currently nursing injuries at Kiambu Level 5, was attacked around 4:30 a.m. Women from the area stormed the police station, demanding immediate action against the perpetrators, who have not yet been apprehended since the incident occurred. “We want those who committed this heinous act to face the rule of law,” said a woman from Gakoe.
Beth Njeri, sister to Hanna Njeri, condemned the act and appealed to relevant authorities to implement measures to prevent such incidents from happening again. She also urged women to come forward and voice their concerns when they feel one of their own has been harassed. “We must come out and assist the administration because we know the culprits,” said Beth Njeri.
While confirming the incident, Githunguri Police Commander Mary Kaimenyi stated that investigations are underway. “Investigation is ongoing, and we hope to find the perpetrator,” she said. The police commander urged the licensing authority to review the process, noting issues in the issuance of licenses, as small areas like Gakoe have licensed clubs that have been difficult to control.
Women are now asking the government to protect the girl child, who has recently become an endangered group following the rise in femicide cases.
