KeNHA Issues a 30 Day Notice to Githurai Traders

The recent 30-day eviction notice issued to traders at Githurai Jubilee Market has sparked widespread protests and raised critical questions about governance, fairness, and urban development in Kiambu County. The notice, reportedly delivered by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), demands that traders vacate the premises, citing illegal occupation of road reserve land and unauthorized encroachment. However, the traders have challenged the authenticity of the notice, pointing out the lack of an official stamp or signature.

The eviction order has ignited tension among the traders, who argue that the move disregards their livelihoods and fails to provide an alternative relocation plan. Many of these traders have operated in the market for years, relying on it as their primary source of income. The traders, expressed frustration, recalling promises made by President William Ruto and Governor Kimani Wamatangi during previous political campaigns to construct an alternative market before any evictions.

The protests have been marked by dramatic scenes, including the use of live bullets and teargas to disperse demonstrators. Traders have accused local authorities of neglecting their concerns and prioritizing infrastructural development over human welfare. They have also raised suspicions about the motives behind the eviction, alleging that it may be driven by personal interests rather than public benefit.

The Githurai Jubilee Market, part of the larger Githurai 45 Market, has been a vital economic hub for the community. Its eviction threatens not only the traders but also the thousands of residents who depend on the market for goods and services. The traders have called for intervention from elected leaders, demanding justice and transparency in the decision-making process.
