NTSA, police intensify festive season road safety crackdown

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), working alongside the National Police Service and the Judiciary, has intensified nationwide road safety operations ahead of Christmas festivities as road accidents continue to claim lives.

NTSA Board Chairman Khatib Mwashetani said the crackdown targets major highways and towns to enforce traffic laws and reduce accidents, noting that 4,458 people have already died on Kenyan roads this year. Speaking in Mombasa, Mwashetani warned against emotional public reactions to accidents, citing the torching of a Mash Poa bus in Salgaa.

He urged long-distance operators to deploy two drivers and ensure vehicles are roadworthy. Authorities are using speed guns and alcoblow devices to curb speeding and drink-driving, with offenders facing instant fines or prosecution.
