Govt condemns viral assault of Nairobi taxi driver over fare dispute

The government has strongly condemned an incident in which a Nairobi taxi driver was allegedly assaulted by a group of women following a fare dispute, captured in a video that has since gone viral online.

In a statement issued on December 23, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Gender Affairs Anne Wang’ombe described the incident as disturbing and unacceptable, noting that violence against service providers undermines the values of a civil society.

The PS said the ministry would pursue accountability for those involved, stressing that no individual is above the law. She further condemned the physical attack on the driver, who was seen in the video trying to shield himself from the assault.

According to reports, the women had booked the taxi through an online platform but allegedly refused to pay upon reaching their destination, leading to the confrontation. The incident sparked widespread public reaction, prompting government intervention.

PS Wang’ombe urged the affected driver to contact the Ministry of Gender, Culture and Children Services for support. Members of the public with information that could assist investigations were also encouraged to report through the toll-free helpline 1195 or via direct message to the department.
