At least eight people have been confirmed dead and five others seriously injured following a tragic road accident along the Eldoret–Webuye highway in Lugari.
The accident occurred on Tuesday night when a 14-seater matatu reportedly lost control and rammed into a stationary trailer transporting fertiliser. Western Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud said seven victims died on the spot, while one succumbed to injuries while being rushed to hospital.
Police reports indicate the trailer had developed mechanical problems and was parked by the roadside before the crash. The trailer driver reportedly fled the scene.
The injured were taken to nearby hospitals as residents gathered at the scene, with some seen scrambling for fertiliser spilled during the crash.
The incident adds to growing concerns over rising road accidents during the festive season, despite intensified enforcement by NTSA and police.
