NTSA clamps 418 vehicles, arrests 42 drivers in festive crackdown

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has flagged widespread traffic violations following intensified enforcement operations during the festive travel period, placing hundreds of motorists at risk of licence suspension or revocation.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, December 24, NTSA said multi-agency compliance checks conducted over the past four days uncovered 1,702 safety violations involving public service, commercial and private vehicles.

The crackdown led to the arrest of 42 drivers and the clamping of 418 vehicles for offences including tampering with speed governors, drink-driving, operating unroadworthy vehicles, carrying excess passengers and driving without valid licences or insurance.

NTSA noted that the violations had contributed to fatal road crashes, with counties such as Kiambu, Nairobi, Nakuru, Kakamega and Uasin Gishu among the most affected.

On December 23 alone, 16 road incidents were recorded, claiming 25 lives, most of them pedestrians and passengers.

The Authority urged all road users to exercise caution and comply with traffic laws as holiday travel peaks.
