Uganda orders temporary internet shutdown ahead of elections

Uganda has ordered a temporary shutdown of public internet access and selected mobile services ahead of its elections scheduled for Thursday.

In a directive issued on Tuesday, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) instructed all licensed mobile network operators and internet service providers to suspend public internet access starting 6pm on January 13, 2026.

The order also affects SIM card sales and registration, as well as outbound data roaming services. However, essential services including healthcare systems, banking platforms and government operations have been exempted from the suspension.

According to the commission, the decision followed recommendations from the Inter-Agency Security Committee and is aimed at safeguarding national security during the election period.

UCC said the temporary measures are intended to curb the rapid spread of misinformation, disinformation, electoral fraud and online incitement that could undermine public confidence and trigger unrest during the polls.
