Nyeri launches 100-day crackdown on drugs and illicit brews

Nyeri County has rolled out an aggressive 100-day Rapid Results Initiative aimed at stamping out drug abuse, illicit brews and criminal gangs, in a joint effort bringing together county and national government agencies.

The initiative follows President William Ruto’s recent directive warning drug traffickers and illegal brewers that assets linked to the trade will be seized and converted to public property upon arrest.

A high-level multi-agency meeting held at the Nyeri Cultural Centre set out a clear road map anchored on Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Bound (SMART) targets, which will be reviewed monthly.

Nyeri County Commissioner Josephat Biwott, senior National Government Administration Officers, and county officials agreed on firm enforcement, intelligence sharing and coordinated operations, while cautioning officers to remain professional and avoid political interference.

The programme also places strong emphasis on rehabilitation, with Ihururu Rehabilitation Centre in Tetu Sub-County expected to play a central role in supporting those affected by substance abuse.

Officials from NACADA, KRA, KEBS, EACC, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Judiciary, public health, security agencies and the County Alcoholic Drinks Regulation Board attended the meeting, signalling a unified approach to restoring public safety and protecting families across Nyeri.
