Mama Ida Odinga accepts UNEP envoy nomination as appointment awaits parliamentary approval

Mama Ida Odinga has confirmed her acceptance of nomination as Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), with the appointment now awaiting parliamentary approval.

Speaking on Sunday during a dedication ceremony at PEFA Church along Thika Road, Ida said she was honoured by the nomination and remained calm despite heightened public attention surrounding the role.

President William Ruto nominated Ida Odinga on Friday, noting that her appointment is subject to vetting and approval by Parliament. If approved, she will replace Ababu Namwamba, who has since been redeployed as Kenya’s ambassador to Uganda.

In a statement, Head of Public Service Felix Koskei said the nomination is expected to strengthen Kenya’s voice on global environmental matters and reinforce the country’s long-standing leadership in environmental diplomacy, anchored in Nairobi as the UN’s environmental hub.

The nomination has, however, sparked debate in political circles, with some critics questioning whether diplomatic appointments are increasingly shaped by political considerations. Others have defended the move, citing Ida Odinga’s public service record and Kenya’s strategic position in global environmental governance.
