Kiambu, defence ministry plan 10,000-seat Thika stadium upgrade

The County Government of Kiambu has unveiled plans to upgrade Thika Stadium into a modern 10,000-seater facility through a joint partnership with the Ministry of Defence.

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi hosted Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru and senior officials from the Department of Defence for talks aimed at fast-tracking the project, which will be jointly implemented by the two institutions.

According to the county leadership, the upgrade will include the construction of a standard football pitch, an eight-lane athletics track, modern spectator stands, and a fully equipped VIP lounge to meet international standards.

In addition, modern kiosks currently under construction around the stadium will be allocated free of charge to existing traders, a move expected to support local livelihoods.

A joint technical team drawn from the Ministry of Defence and the Kiambu County Government will oversee the project’s implementation and ensure quality standards are met.

The project is also expected to create employment opportunities, with local Thika residents prioritised for construction jobs during the upgrade period.

Once complete, the revamped stadium is set to boost sports development, host major events, and position Thika as a key sporting hub in the region.
