Ida Odinga has declared a personal net worth of Ksh500 million while appearing before a parliamentary committee for vetting as Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme.
Speaking before the National Assembly of Kenya Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations on Friday, Ida clarified that her declaration strictly reflects her personal assets.
“There are things that belong to me and those that belong to the Oginga family for whom I also have interest, but mine is about Ksh500 million,” she told the committee, without detailing the source of the wealth.
During the session, she outlined her vision if approved for the diplomatic role at the United Nations Environment Programme, stressing the urgent need to tackle environmental degradation.
Ida warned that Kenya’s future prosperity depends on sustainable climate action and responsible environmental management, noting that vulnerable communities often bear the brunt of environmental damage.
She pledged to champion Kenya’s and Africa’s interests at the global environmental body, saying she would work to ensure that environmental decisions made at the international level translate into tangible benefits at the grassroots.
In an emotional moment, she paid tribute to her late husband, Raila Odinga, crediting him for shaping her public service journey during their 52 years of marriage.
The committee is expected to retreat and table its report before the House for debate and approval.
