NTSA warns drivers over wet roads

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a nationwide advisory urging motorists to exercise extreme caution as heavy rains continue pounding various parts of the country.

In a notice released on March 2, the authority warned drivers against overconfidence while navigating wet and slippery roads, stressing that speeding during rainy conditions significantly increases the risk of accidents.

NTSA reminded motorists that wet roads can quickly turn dangerous, regardless of a driver’s experience behind the wheel. The authority cautioned that reduced visibility, slippery surfaces, and poor road conditions require heightened attention and discipline.

“Do not let overconfidence drive you this rainy season, as wet roads do not forgive ego, and speed cannot outmatch slippery turns. Experience does not eliminate reduced visibility; slow down, keep a safe distance, and turn on your headlights,” NTSA stated.

The advisory comes at a time when heavy rains have already disrupted transport in several regions. Over the weekend, motorists were forced to spend the night in traffic along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway after persistent downpours caused massive congestion. The gridlock reportedly began on Friday evening along the Nakuru–Gilgil stretch before worsening overnight, leaving drivers stranded for hours.

In addition to traffic snarl-ups, the rains have led to the destruction of bridges in some areas and caused multiple road incidents. On Monday morning, two people lost their lives in an accident along Mombasa Road, although authorities have not directly linked the crash to poor visibility caused by the ongoing rains.

NTSA has now directed drivers to reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance, and ensure headlights are switched on when driving in rainy conditions. The authority also urged public service vehicle operators and commercial drivers to exercise extra vigilance to safeguard passengers.

According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, heavy rainfall is expected to persist throughout the month, with Nairobi and parts of Western Kenya projected to receive the heaviest downpours.

The continued rainfall has raised concerns about road safety, especially on highways prone to flooding and reduced visibility. Authorities are urging all road users — including pedestrians and boda boda riders — to remain alert and prioritize safety.

As the rainy season intensifies, NTSA says preventing road tragedies will depend largely on individual responsibility and strict adherence to traffic rules.
