Githunguri housing project officially kicks off

Residents of Githunguri are set to benefit from a major development boost following the official launch of the Githunguri Affordable Housing Project.

Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba announced that the project will deliver 2,180 social and market housing units, alongside key public amenities aimed at transforming the constituency’s infrastructure and services.

According to the MP, the development will not only provide affordable housing but also introduce critical facilities designed to serve the growing population. Among the planned amenities are a cultural museum centre, a community hall, new government offices including a Huduma Centre, an expanded public school complete with a swimming pool and kindergarten, and a new police station.

The project will also include housing for police officers and public servants, a food court, garage service bays, and a picnic park. Additionally, 1,180 hostel units will be constructed at Githunguri Technical and Vocational College (TVC) to accommodate students pursuing various courses at the institution.

Speaking on the launch, Wamuchomba described the project as a significant milestone in the constituency’s development journey, noting that it aligns with broader efforts to improve living standards and create economic opportunities for residents.

Beyond housing, the MP emphasized the importance of local participation in the project. She revealed that her office is liaising with contractors to ensure qualified residents benefit from employment opportunities during the construction phase.

“We are engaging contractors to ensure our locals who are skilled in plumbing, masonry, welding, electricity and carpentry register at the MP’s office in Githunguri this week. The contractors will shortlist workers from our database,” she stated.

The move is expected to create job opportunities for youth and skilled workers within the constituency, offering a direct economic impact beyond the housing units themselves.

Residents have welcomed the announcement, expressing optimism that the project will spur growth in the area by improving security, expanding access to government services, and supporting education and vocational training.

The inclusion of a new police station and public servant housing is also seen as a step towards strengthening security and service delivery within Githunguri.

As preparations begin, Wamuchomba expressed confidence that the project will redefine the constituency’s landscape and position it for future growth.

With construction now officially set to begin, many residents are hopeful that the initiative will not only provide decent housing but also create sustainable development opportunities for the wider community.
