Massive fire engulfed Powerstar Supermarket in Ruiru town early Monday morning, August 26, 2024, destroying property worth millions of shillings. The blaze, which began around 5 AM, was reportedly triggered by a generator explosion that followed a power outage.

Residents described how the generator, activated to restore electricity, started emitting smoke before exploding and igniting a fire that quickly spread from the supermarket’s kitchen to other sections. The heavily stocked supermarket suffered significant damage.

Firefighters from Kiambu town and Thika arrived at the scene about an hour later to battle the intense flames. Despite their efforts, the fire had already caused extensive damage, leaving the supermarket owners facing substantial losses.

Local residents expressed frustration over the delayed response, emphasizing the need for a dedicated fire station in Ruiru. They argued that the county government’s current emergency response capabilities are inadequate, leading to significant property losses.

“We have been calling for a fire station in Ruiru for years,” said Eliud Nyongo, a local resident. “We have lost countless properties due to fires because we have to rely on help from other towns. It’s time the county takes action and establishes a fire station in our area.”

Ruiru DCIO Jeremiah Dubai confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage. He praised the firefighters’ efforts in containing the blaze and urged residents to remain vigilant. Additionally, he supported the establishment of a local fire station to enhance emergency response capabilities in Ruiru.

As authorities continue to investigate the incident, the community remains on edge, calling for improved emergency services and fire prevention measures to prevent future tragedies.
