Gatundu South MP Kagombe Propose Reforms for Kenya’s Electoral System

Gatundu South MP Kagombe has proposed changes to Kenya’s electoral system to address long-standing issues facing the nation. The MP attributes Kenya’s lack of development to the current electoral system, citing that the country is always in a state of political mood, with leaders more focused on preparing for upcoming elections rather than prioritizing development.

According to Kagombe, a change in term limit will not solve the current issues that Kenyans are facing.

Kenya’s election system occurs every five years, with citizens voting for six positions: president, governor, senator, women representative, member of parliament, and MCA, all on the same day.

Now, MP Kagombe argues that this system is inefficient because newly elected leaders take time to settle, ultimately holding the country back. “Our elections should be restructured so that the presidential election is held at a different time from that of senators or MPs to ensure continuity for the country,” the MP suggested.

The MP now suggests that the constitution needs to be amended so that elections are held similarly to those in the United States, where congressional elections take place at a different time from the presidential election.

He added that even if the presidential term limit is extended beyond ten years, Kenya will still face the same issue.
