Kiambu County residents are advised to prepare for an October-to-December (OND) rainy season marked by below-average rainfall, according to the County Meteorological Services. The forecast indicates intermittent cloudiness with light showers, primarily in the afternoons and evenings.
While some areas will experience rainfall, the distribution will be uneven, with parts of Lari, Limuru, and Kikuyu receiving minimal precipitation. Other regions, including Juja, Ruiru, Kiambu, Kabete, Githunguri, Gatundu, and Thika, will likely receive average to below-average rainfall.
The County Met Director, Magdalene Gateri, has urged residents to take proactive measures to mitigate the potential adverse impacts of the season. “Residents should be prepared for a below-average rainfall season,” Gateri said. “They should take steps to conserve water and implement conservation agricultural methods.”
Key sectors such as agriculture, livestock, food security, water, irrigation, and resource management are encouraged to implement strategies to ensure resilience. “We urge stakeholders in these sectors to adopt measures that will help them cope with the expected rainfall deficit,” Gateri added.
The energy and disaster management sectors are advised to prepare for potential infrastructure damage and power disruptions. The health sector is urged to be vigilant against waterborne diseases and malaria, and to provide adequate medication and preventive measures to the public.
Additionally, the County Met Director has called on residents to take active steps to prepare their land for the upcoming short rainy season. Implement conservation agricultural methods and plant early to maximize crop yields. Conserve water through practices like drip irrigation. Enhance soil conservation measures to reduce water erosion. Harvest rainwater for domestic and irrigation purposes.
Reuse and recycle water to minimize wastage. Trim trees near power lines and buildings to prevent damage. Have alternative power sources ready in case of power outages. Seek medical attention and take preventive measures against waterborne diseases and malaria.
Gateri emphasized the importance of community preparedness. “By taking proactive measures, residents can minimize the negative impacts of the below-average rainfall,” she said.
