Residents of Ngariama village in Gichugu Constituency, Kirinyaga County, are mourning the death of a 33-year-old man who was fatally injured while cutting timber in a tragic accident that has left the local community in shock.
The deceased, identified as Dennis, died after a large tree branch broke off and struck him during a tree-felling exercise. Witnesses said the accident occurred as he and several other young men were working together to cut down a tree for timber.
According to residents who were present, the group was pushing the tree during the cutting process when one of the branches suddenly snapped and fell, hitting Dennis. He sustained severe injuries and reportedly died on the spot before any help could reach him.
The incident quickly attracted villagers, many of whom gathered at the scene in disbelief after learning what had happened.
Neighbours described Dennis as a hardworking and ambitious young man who was focused on improving his future. According to residents, he had been cutting the tree to obtain timber that would be used in constructing his own house.
One of the neighbours, Duncan Njeru Karuba, said Dennis was among several youths assisting with the work when the branch unexpectedly detached from the tree.
Another resident, Anthony Mwangi Muriuki, explained that the tree had been given to Dennis by his father so that he could use the timber for his planned construction project.
“He was working hard to prepare materials for his home. Unfortunately, the branch fell on him before they could complete the work,” said Mwangi.
The tragedy has deeply affected Dennis’ family, who are struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss.
His uncle, Francis Mbogo, said he had spoken to Dennis shortly before the accident and was shocked when he later learned that he had died.
According to the grieving relative, Dennis had even planned to assist him with another tree-cutting exercise the following day.
As the body was moved to the mortuary, residents continued to gather at the scene, many expressing sadness over the incident and reflecting on the risks associated with tree-felling activities.
Community members described the accident as one of the most shocking incidents witnessed in the area in recent years.
The tragedy has also renewed calls for greater caution during timber harvesting and tree-cutting operations, particularly when residents undertake such activities without specialized safety equipment.
For family members and neighbours, Dennis’ death remains a painful reminder of how quickly a routine task can turn into a devastating tragedy.
