KUPPET Issues Seven-Day Ultimatum to TSC, Threatens Nationwide Teachers’ Strike

KUPPET has given the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) a seven-day ultimatum to begin negotiations on the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). If TSC fails to act, teachers across Kenya will strike.

National Chairman Omboko Milemba and Acting Secretary-General Moses Nthurima have voiced their frustration over stalled talks. They have criticized the government for delaying negotiations despite receiving KUPPET’s memorandum last year. Since teachers are demanding salary increments, better working conditions, and fair promotions, the matter requires urgent attention.

Speaking in Mtwapa, Kilifi County, Milemba emphasized the need for swift action. He warned that teachers will not wait indefinitely. “TSC should have reached out this month, but time is running out. We demand immediate negotiations,” he asserted. Likewise, Nthurima supported his statement, criticizing TSC for failing to conduct the promised job evaluation. Because this evaluation was meant to guide salary adjustments and promotions, its delay has caused significant concern.

KUPPET has stressed that teachers are struggling under unfair terms. Although educators work tirelessly, their financial burdens continue to grow due to stagnant wages and the rising cost of living. Without salary adjustments, their hardships will intensify. Therefore, the union demands that the government act quickly to prevent disruptions in schools.

KUPPET’s ultimatum has significantly increased pressure on TSC. Since teachers are waiting for negotiations, KUPPET’s leadership has warned that failure to act will force educators to take decisive steps. If talks do not begin within seven days, the union will hold a decision-making meeting that may trigger a nationwide teachers’ strike, affecting schools across the country.

The government now faces a crucial decision. If officials ignore KUPPET’s demands, protests will erupt across Kenya, disrupting learning and destabilizing the education sector. Because students and parents will suffer the consequences of a prolonged strike, officials must act before the situation worsens.

As the deadline approaches, pressure continues to mount on TSC. Either officials initiate talks or teachers will walk out. KUPPET stands firm in its position, demanding fairness and accountability.
