The Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) has tightened regulations on gambling advertisements, ensuring responsible promotion while protecting vulnerable groups.
BCLB now requires gambling operators to get approval before airing ads. The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) must also classify all gambling promotions.
Authorities have banned celebrities, influencers, and content creators from endorsing gambling. Officials argue that such endorsements falsely glamorize betting and encourage risky behaviour.
Additionally, gambling ads must not appear near schools, religious sites, playgrounds, or malls, areas frequented by children. Officials aim to limit exposure to minors.
Outdoor ads now face restrictions. Only electronic billboards are allowed, and operators can display a maximum of two ads per hour. The use of wall branding, bus wraps, and street pole ads is prohibited.
Print media faces new limits too. Gambling ads can appear only twice a week and must stay within sports sections. Authorities want to minimize gambling visibility.
Ads must display a responsible gambling warning: “Gambling is addictive! Play responsibly.” They must also include the operator’s BCLB license number, customer care contacts, and a disclaimer stating that gambling is not for persons under 18.
BCLB has warned operators against violating these guidelines. Offenders risk penalties, suspension, or full license revocation. Regulatory agencies will conduct frequent audits to ensure compliance.
