Journalists injured during the madaraka celebrations

On June 1, several journalists sustained injuries while covering Kenya’s Madaraka Day celebrations, exposing the dangers media professionals face. Crowds gathered to commemorate Kenya’s self-governance, but the event took a troubling turn.

Security personnel rushed to control disturbances when press members nearby were caught in the chaos. Some were struck, suffering injuries that required immediate medical attention. Fellow journalists and attendees quickly stepped in to help.

Meanwhile, infiltrators took advantage of the disorder, snatching mobile phones and cash from unsuspecting victims. Emergency teams arrived swiftly, assessed the injured journalists, and transported them to hospitals. Doctors confirmed minor bruises for some, while others required extensive care. Thankfully, all were in stable condition.

Colleagues voiced concerns over the attacks, stressing the need for better protection. Kisumu Journalists Network Interim Chairperson Rushdie Oudia condemned the incident, calling it a violation of press freedom.

“As journalists, we are deeply concerned and shocked, especially by the utter irresponsibility displayed by police officers who should be protecting life and property,” said Oudia.

Government officials acknowledged the incident and promised thorough investigations. They assured the public that future celebrations would prioritize journalist safety.

Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene.

“What is happening is very unfortunate. Gangs moving in groups have targeted innocent people and stolen their phones and money in full view of the police,” said resident Monica Aloo.

Despite the distressing events, the celebrations continued, showcasing Kenya’s resilience. However, the injuries reminded the public of the dangers journalists face while reporting. Their dedication to delivering truthful coverage often puts them in harm’s way, emphasizing the need for stronger safeguards.

After receiving treatment, the injured journalists assured everyone they were recovering well. They thanked their colleagues, medical teams, and concerned citizens for their swift support.
