Nairobi locks down as authorities boost security ahead of Saba Saba protests

Nairobi braced for unrest on Monday as security agencies intensified operations ahead of the Saba Saba protests. Authorities barricaded key roads, blocked access routes, and deployed police heavily across Nairobi and Kiambu counties. The move disrupted business, halted public transport, and brought much of the capital to a standstill.

This year’s Saba Saba demonstrations, held annually on July 7, gained fresh momentum amid widespread frustration over the rising cost of living, controversial government policies, and concerns about police misconduct. Young Kenyans have largely fueled the latest protest wave, demanding reforms and justice for victims of recent clashes.

Police set up barricades at major Nairobi entry and exit points. These included Mombasa Road near General Motors, Waiyaki Way near Safaricom HQ, Lang’ata Road at T-Mall, and Thika Superhighway at the GSU HQ and Survey area. They also blocked sections of Kenyatta Avenue, Haile Selassie Avenue, and Uhuru Highway, severely restricting access to the Central Business District. Pedestrians and motorists faced security checks, and inspection points saw long queues.

Security officers in Kiambu County enforced similar measures in towns bordering Nairobi. They blocked access at Ruiru-Kimbo junction, Githurai 45 footbridge, and several points along Kiambu Road at Kanunga and Kwamaiko. These restrictions caused delays and forced travelers to seek alternative routes. Police presence was visible in Thika, Juja, and Kiambu town, with officers stationed near government buildings and key transport areas.

Kenya Railways suspended commuter train services for the day. Matatu operators scaled back trips, leaving many roads into the city empty. Most businesses chose to stay closed. Schools also shut down temporarily and asked students to remain at home for safety.

Authorities acted after overnight arrests in Mombasa, where they detained several youths allegedly traveling to Nairobi to join the protests. Security teams also patrolled residential estates and urged communities to remain peaceful.

Over the past few weeks, Gen Z-led demonstrations have intensified calls for economic and political reforms. Protesters have cited inflation, joblessness, and a lack of accountability. The Saba Saba movement draws symbolic strength from the historic 1990 protests that pushed for multiparty democracy in Kenya.

The Ministry of Interior said the operations aimed to maintain order while upholding constitutional rights. Officers received instructions to act professionally and avoid clashing with peaceful protesters.

Still, civil rights groups raised alarms about the heavy-handed response. They urged transparency, restraint, and respect for citizens’ right to assemble.

As Monday wore on, Nairobi and Kiambu remained tense. With blocked roads and shuttered shops, residents watched closely to see whether this protest would shift the country’s political conversation.
