LSK Thika boycotts courts after Kawanjiru’s dramatic arrest at Ruiru Law Courts

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Thika Chapter has declared an indefinite boycott of all courts and government offices under its jurisdiction following what it terms a brazen violation of court orders. The decision stems from the dramatic re-arrest of Peter Kinyanjui Wanjiru, popularly known as Kawanjiru, inside the Ruiru Law Courts on Friday, July 3.

Kawanjiru, who serves as the Kiambu County Youth Leader for the Democratic Change Party (DCP), had just secured his release on bond when heavily armed officers, believed to be from the anti-terror unit, stormed the court precincts and seized him. The bond had been set at KSh 500,000 with two sureties of a similar amount by Chief Magistrate Joseph Were, who had also issued a standing order against any further arrest within the court’s jurisdiction.

Despite this directive, a white van carrying masked officers entered the court compound, forcibly removed Kawanjiru from the holding cells, and drove off. Gunshots were fired to disperse protesting relatives and onlookers, leading to panic and tension. Eyewitnesses reported that some family members hurled stones at the vehicle while screaming in protest, but the officers sped off under tight security.

In response, LSK Thika Chapter Chairperson Jackline Wanjiru Mwangi led a press briefing at the Thika Law Courts condemning the incident. She termed the re-arrest as a grave affront to the independence of the judiciary and a direct attack on the rule of law. The LSK council demanded the immediate identification of the officers involved and called for their prosecution and disciplinary action within 24 hours. Mwangi reiterated that legal professionals in the region would not return to courtrooms or public offices until justice is served.

Earlier on the same day, State Counsel Duncan Ondimu had filed a miscellaneous application seeking to detain Kawanjiru for 21 more days. The prosecution alleged that the youth leader was involved in acts of arson and destruction of public property in Kikuyu Sub-County during demonstrations held the previous week. However, Chief Magistrate Were had ruled against continued detention, citing lack of sufficient cause and ordering Kawanjiru’s release on bond.

The re-arrest has drawn sharp criticism from both legal practitioners and human rights activists, who argue that it sets a dangerous precedent for undermining judicial decisions and due process.

Meanwhile, efforts to trace Kawanjiru’s whereabouts continue, even as pressure mounts on national authorities to uphold the rule of law and restore confidence in judicial protection.
