Ruto Orders Police to Leave Contested Baba Dogo Land, Promises Stadium for Local Youth

President William Ruto has directed the immediate withdrawal of police officers deployed to a disputed parcel of land in Baba Dogo, Nairobi.

Speaking on Thursday during the launch of the Climate WorkX: Rehabilitating the Nairobi River programme, the President instructed Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Nairobi Regional Commander George Seda to ensure the officers vacate the site without delay.

“I heard there are police officers deployed on that land. I want to direct that they immediately vacate the premises. That land belongs to the public, and this directive should be implemented with immediate effect,” President Ruto said.

He condemned the unnamed private developer attempting to take over the land and warned that the government would not tolerate illegal grabs of public property.

“To the developer who wants to grab that land, be warned, three things are waiting for you. Stop immediately or prepare to face us head-on. This will not be entertained,” he warned.

The President assured residents that the government would instead use the land to build a stadium that would nurture local sporting talent and benefit the community.

“We will come to construct a stadium on that piece of land,” he said, reinforcing the State’s position on safeguarding public land from encroachment.

The ownership of the contested property has been under dispute for months, with a private developer laying claim to it.

Tensions peaked on Wednesday when police officers in anti-riot gear clashed with locals resisting the planned demolition and takeover of the land. Bulldozers had been stationed at the site, awaiting clearance to proceed.

However, a group of young people stood their ground and staged a peaceful resistance. Videos from the scene showed them playing football and engaging in other recreational activities, seemingly undeterred by the police presence.

With no clearance granted, the bulldozers remained idle, and the demolition was ultimately called off.
