Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has officially discontinued the use of One-Time Passwords (OTP) for authorising claims under the Social Health Authority (SHA).
Speaking at the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) on Monday, Duale announced that all approvals will now be processed either through biometric verification or the newly launched Practice 360 app.
The shift to biometrics, according to Duale, is part of the government’s wider strategy to curb fraud and enhance accountability within Kenya’s health insurance system.
“As of now, biometric registration is live in all Level 4, 5, and 6 facilities, with ongoing efforts to onboard Level 3 and 2 facilities across the country,” Duale stated during the launch of the national biometric verification system.
The Cabinet Secretary also unveiled the Practice 360 app, now fully active and geo-tagged for use within registered health facilities.
“This is a significant milestone in the fight against fraud in the healthcare sector,” he noted. “The app is now live and fully integrated into our system from this minute.”
The Ministry of Health says this digital upgrade will ensure only eligible Kenyans access services under SHA, closing loopholes that have allowed misuse of public funds in the past.
Biometric registration, now fully rolled out in major referral hospitals, will be key to verifying patient identity at the point of service. Officials say the system is secure, efficient, and tamper-proof.
The Ministry is now fast-tracking the onboarding of lower-level facilities to complete the nationwide transition.
This move comes as part of broader reforms aimed at improving efficiency in service delivery under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda.
