The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced a new login option on its iTax platform, allowing individual taxpayers to access the system using their National Identity Card (ID) numbers.
The update, announced on Monday, August 4, marks a significant shift aimed at enhancing user experience and promoting tax compliance across the country.
Previously, Kenyans could only log into the iTax platform using their KRA Personal Identification Number (PIN). However, under the new system, taxpayers will have the flexibility to choose between using their ID or PIN.
According to KRA, the change is in response to frequent feedback from users who reported difficulty in recalling their PINs compared to their national ID numbers, which are more commonly used in daily transactions such as mobile money payments.
“The introduction of the ID number login is a direct response to taxpayer feedback,” KRA stated. “It’s a small but meaningful change that we believe will make it easier for more Kenyans to interact with the tax system.”
The iTax platform offers a wide range of services including filing returns, applying for tax compliance certificates, and other critical tax-related functions.
KRA believes the simplified login process will encourage more people to use the platform, thereby expanding the country’s tax base by removing obstacles that discourage compliance.
This development follows closely on the heels of another major announcement by KRA regarding improvements in customs dispute resolution.
On July 31, the authority unveiled two systems, the Independent Review of Objections (IRO) and the Technical Review Unit (TRU), which are set to be operational by August 2025. The new mechanisms are designed to ensure that disputes arising from customs decisions are handled with greater transparency and fairness.
