The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced the construction of two elevated roadways, known as viaducts, within Nairobi’s central business district to ease congestion between the CBD and Upper Hill.
KURA Assistant Director of Urban Design, Benjamin Asin, said on Monday that one viaduct will stretch from Integrity Centre and land near Serena Hotel on Valley Road. The second will run from the Milimani Law Courts to the National Library area along Ngong Road.
“These viaducts will ensure seamless movement between the CBD and Upper Hill, which is among the busiest corridors in the city,” Asin noted.
The projects form part of the Valley Road–Kenyatta Avenue/Ngong/Nyerere Interchange and Upper Hill–Haile Selassie Overpass works. KURA also plans to expand walkways and cycling tracks between the CBD and Upper Hill, and install additional streetlights to improve the ambience and safety of the route.
“A viaduct is an elevated road over land, like the expressway. It blends into the urban environment without disrupting visual appeal,” Asin explained.
KURA is simultaneously undertaking major rehabilitation works on key city roads, including the Valley Road–Kenyatta Avenue route and Ngong Road.
The authority is also overseeing the construction of a four-lane flyover at the Ngong Road–Naivasha Road junction near Junction Mall. The project will feature improved junctions, walkways, and cycling lanes, and is expected to be completed by July 2027.
“Construction of the Ngong Rd–Naivasha Rd (Junction Mall) Flyover is well underway. Once complete, it will ease congestion and enhance urban mobility,” KURA said in an earlier statement.
KURA has further pledged to fast-track stalled road projects across the country as part of its broader urban infrastructure improvement plan.
