President William Ruto has promised the Harambee Stars an additional token of appreciation following their spirited campaign at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The President, speaking through Deputy President Kithure Kindiki after Friday’s match, lauded the team for uniting the nation and delivering pride despite their quarter-final exit.
“Forget about the motivation and the other things in between. The President has said he wants to build on what you have brought to our country, the honor, unity, and pride, and he will reach out through the leadership and the Ministry to give you a thank you,” Kindiki told the players.
From the start of the tournament, Ruto has offered consistent support to the national team, often pledging and delivering rewards for their achievements.
In an official statement from Japan, the President praised the team’s resilience and the inspiration they gave Kenyans.
“We had a remarkable run. Harambee Stars have silenced doubters, lifted the spirit of a nation, and reminded us that when Kenyans play with courage, confidence, and determination, nothing is impossible,” Ruto said.
Leaders Congratulate Stars
ODM leader Raila Odinga joined other leaders in celebrating the team, saying: “Hongera Harambee Stars for a good display of football. You’ve managed to unite and make Kenya proud.”
Deputy President Kindiki, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino also commended the team for their resilience.
“Though the journey ends here, you walk away as winners, proving our resilience, our heart, and our unyielding belief that we belong at the very top,” said CS Mvurya.
Meanwhile, Ruto urged fans to keep filling stadiums despite Kenya’s exit, noting the country remains a co-host of the historic Pamoja CHAN tournament.
“Though we exit the tournament, we remain the proud co-hosts of the historic Pamoja CHAN. Let us continue to fill Kasarani with cheer, energy, pride, and love for the game, all the way to the final whistle,” he stated.
