A group of Kiambu County Assembly Members (MCAs) have thrown their weight behind Governor Kimani Wamatangi, dismissing corruption allegations raised by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
The governor is accused of involvement in a Ksh1.27 billion tender scandal allegedly awarded through family proxies when he served as Kiambu senator in 2017.
Speaking during a Sunday service at PCEA Komothai in Githunguri Constituency, the MCAs defended Wamatangi, terming the claims politically driven and aimed at destabilizing his administration.
The EACC recently recommended the prosecution of three sitting governors, including Wamatangi, Marsabit’s Mohamud Ali, and Bomet’s Hillary Barchok, over separate graft cases amounting to Ksh728 million and Ksh152 million, respectively.
Led by Kiambu Deputy Speaker and Hospital Ward MCA John Ndichu, alongside Limuru Central MCA Nduta Wamuongi, the ward representatives accused the anti-graft agency of being misused to settle political scores.
They pledged unwavering support for Wamatangi, urging political rivals to stop early campaigning and allow the governor’s administration to focus on development.
In his remarks, Wamatangi attributed the political pressure to his refusal to engage in corrupt dealings, citing attempts by unnamed individuals to irregularly grab public assets, including a 100-acre parcel of land ceded by fruit processor Delmonte in Thika.
He appealed to the church to pray for him, insisting that he would remain focused on service delivery and only engage in politics once the official campaign season begins.
