The government has confirmed that 180,000 young Kenyans have been shortlisted for the Ksh50,000 National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) grant.
Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya told MPs on Tuesday, August 26, that more than 1.4 million applications were received through the *254# USSD platform earlier this year. The five-year World Bank–funded initiative seeks to tackle unemployment, income insecurity, and low savings among youth.
“Out of the 1.4 million applicants, 180,000 have been shortlisted through a fair randomization process and are currently undertaking an online aptitude test before final selection,” Oparanya told the National Assembly Trade Committee.
Each successful applicant will receive Ksh50,000 disbursed in two instalments of Ksh25,000, in addition to Business Development Services (BDS) training and mentorship.
Of the shortlisted candidates, 46 percent are women while 26,000 are persons with disabilities.
Oparanya assured MPs that the program will officially launch on September 18, 2025, with the first phase targeting 54,000 youths. Two more cohorts will follow.
Lawmakers, however, raised concerns about delays in rolling out the multi-billion-shilling project and questioned some of the requirements set for applicants.
The update comes just two weeks after President William Ruto announced that Ksh5 billion had already been released to support 70 youths in every ward across the country.
“I have said that beginning next month, we have agreed with the World Bank that youths in each ward will receive business support. Seventy youths in each ward will receive Ksh50,000 to start their businesses,” the President said at State House on August 9.
