Medical garment manufacturer FullCare Medical has launched a new production facility in Tatu City, a 5,000-acre Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Kiambu County. The $30 million investment creates 1,800 jobs in the first phase, with plans to expand to 7,000 in the future.
The state-of-the-art facility utilizes solar technology, promoting eco-friendly manufacturing. FullCare Medical is positioned to annually export USD 60 million worth of medical goods while catering to local demands, according to Lu Jianguo, the company’s Founder.
Stephen Jennings, Founder and CEO of Rendeavour, the master developer of Tatu City, emphasized the SEZ’s role in attracting significant foreign direct investment to Kenya. Tatu City has already enticed over 78 businesses, including global leaders across various sectors such as healthcare, food and beverage production, call centers, and software engineering, generating numerous employment opportunities for Kenyans.
The opening ceremony witnessed the presence of Zhang Yijun, Minister Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Nairobi, along with Kenyan government officials, underscoring the bilateral cooperation fostering progress between China and Kenya.
FullCare Medical’s Africa expansion received substantial backing from the International Finance Corporation, the investment arm of the World Bank, which provided USD 100 million in financing.
This venture marks one of the most significant foreign direct investments in Kenya, spotlighting the proactive engagement of dynamic Chinese enterprises in Africa.
Tatu City SEZ offers an array of business benefits, including VAT zero-rating, import and stamp duty exemptions, and favorable corporate tax rates, attracting a diverse portfolio of local, regional, and global businesses.
