Experts Urge Kenyans to Embrace AI in Farming to Tackle Hunger and Climate Change

Education experts are calling on Kenyans to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) in agriculture, saying it could transform food production and help the country beat hunger.

Speaking during an interdisciplinary conference at Mount Kenya University’s Nakuru campus, MKU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi said adopting AI and other smart technologies is no longer optional, but essential for resilient food systems.

He noted that innovations such as precision agriculture can increase crop yields, cut post-harvest losses and reduce waste, while also supporting sustainable farming practices.

“Technology is no longer a luxury but a necessity for building a more sustainable future,” Prof. Jaganyi said, citing examples where AI and modern tech have revolutionized healthcare, renewable energy and business.

State Department of University Education Director Dr. David Watene, who was the chief guest, assured that government policies are geared towards supporting research, innovation and agriculture as key drivers of national development.

MKU Nakuru Campus Director Dr. Jacqueline Omuya added that the university will remain at the forefront of research and innovation. She described the conference as a “launchpad for solutions” designed to transform Kenyan communities.

Prof. Jaganyi hailed the event as a catalyst for collaboration, bringing together diverse fields to generate solutions beyond what any single discipline could achieve.

The conference was held at MKU’s new Infinite Quest Auditorium, named after a winning entry by Hamia Adhiambo Ouma, a Diploma in Business Management student.
