Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has raised alarm over a sharp surge in patients particularly expectant mothers seeking care, following the prolonged doctors’ strike in Kiambu County.
Acting CEO Dr. Richard Lesiyampe said the facility is recording double its normal maternity cases, with many patients arriving in critical condition from both Kiambu and Nairobi counties.
“This has led to a sharp rise in the number of very sick patients arriving at the hospital many in critical condition. The Maternity Department has been hardest hit, with the Labour Ward and Newborn Unit now handling more than twice their normal capacity,” Dr. Lesiyampe stated in a Wednesday statement.
He expressed concern that some mothers and infants were succumbing to complications after reaching KNH too late for intervention.
The increased influx has also stretched vital hospital resources, including operating theatres, blood banks, and diagnostic services.
Dr. Lesiyampe urged striking doctors and county officials to urgently resolve the impasse, noting that resumption of services in Kiambu and Nairobi hospitals would help decongest the national referral facility.
“We appeal to all parties involved in the ongoing industrial action to resolve their differences quickly. Restoring normal operations in Kiambu and Nairobi County hospitals will ease pressure on KNH and ensure that patients receive care closer to their homes,” he added.
The appeal comes days after the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) claimed that 136 babies had died during the four-month strike a figure the Kiambu County Health Department dismissed as exaggerated.
County Health Officer Patrick Nyagah accused the union of inflating statistics to create panic, insisting the mortality rate remained unchanged from last year’s figures when there was no strike.
Doctors in Kiambu downed tools on May 26, leaving hundreds of patients stranded and forcing the transfer of 697 medical interns to other counties.
