Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has dismissed claims by the doctors’ union that the county’s health sector is in crisis, insisting that hospitals across the region are operating efficiently.
Delivering his State of the County Address at the Kiambu County Assembly, Wamatangi maintained that no infant deaths had been recorded in county health facilities between January and July this year, terming reports of collapsed services and child fatalities as false and misleading.
“Our hospitals are running smoothly, and our people are receiving the healthcare they deserve. There has been no single infant death reported during this period,” Wamatangi stated.
The Governor said his administration has made significant progress in improving healthcare and expanding medical infrastructure across Kiambu, noting that ongoing investments have enhanced service delivery and patient care.
The County Assembly leadership, led by Majority Leader Godffrey Mucheke and Deputy Speaker John Njiru, supported the Governor’s remarks. The MCAs accused officials of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) of spreading misinformation meant to create unnecessary panic among residents.
Health County Executive Committee (CEC) member Dr. Elias Maina echoed the Governor’s sentiments, terming the KMPDU’s statements as “malicious and politically motivated.”
“Those claims are baseless and only intended to discredit the county leadership. The reality on the ground is that our facilities are functional and adequately staffed,” said Dr. Maina.
During his two-hour address, Wamatangi also highlighted several ongoing projects and programs his administration has initiated over the past three years, saying they have brought tangible improvements to various sectors, including healthcare, roads, and education.
He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring accessible, quality healthcare for all Kiambu residents, promising to continue modernizing facilities and supporting health workers to deliver efficient services.
