Basic Education PS Bitok directs primary schools to plant 2,000 fruit trees each on Friday, October 10, Mazingira Day 2025

Primary schools across Kenya have been directed to lead the country’s environmental conservation efforts during Mazingira Day 2025, set for Friday, October 10, by planting at least 2,000 fruit trees each.

The directive was issued by Basic Education Principal Secretary Prof. Julius Bitok, who said the exercise will be carried out under this year’s theme, “Citizen-Centric Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship.”

Prof. Bitok said the Ministry of Education has identified both public and private primary schools as the main venues for the national tree-planting exercise. The initiative, he explained, seeks to promote environmental conservation while improving school-based nutrition through the establishment of fruit tree orchards in learning institutions.

“The objective is to promote environmental conservation while enhancing school-based nutrition through fruit tree orchards in learning institutions,” said Prof. Bitok.

“The exercise will also strengthen alumni networks by rallying former and current learners to support initiatives that benefit their schools.”

The PS added that regional, county, and sub-county directors of education will oversee the exercise within their jurisdictions to ensure full participation and proper coordination.

In his circular, Prof. Bitok directed education administrators to communicate the directive to all school heads, encourage active participation of alumni and the local community, and ensure that learners report to school on Friday, October 10, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., despite the public holiday.

“Your cooperation in ensuring the successful celebration of Mazingira Day 2025 is highly appreciated,” the PS said.

He further noted that the government’s focus on fruit trees will not only help restore Kenya’s environment but also provide a sustainable source of nutrition and income for schools.

The nationwide exercise underscores Kenya’s commitment to environmental stewardship and the integration of sustainability in the education sector, aligning with the country’s broader reforestation and climate action goals.
