Former U.S. President Barack Obama pays glowing tribute to Raila Odinga, hailing him as a true champion of democracy

Former U.S. President Barack Obama has paid a glowing tribute to Kenya’s late opposition leader and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a “true champion of democracy” whose legacy will endure across Africa and beyond.

In a statement released on Saturday, Obama remembered Raila as a courageous leader who dedicated his life to advancing justice, freedom, and good governance.

“Raila Odinga was a true champion of democracy. A child of independence, he endured decades of struggle and sacrifice for the broader cause of freedom and self-governance in Kenya,” Obama stated. The former U.S. President, whose father hailed from Kenya, said he personally witnessed Raila’s selflessness and patriotism over the years. “Time and again, I saw him put the interests of his country ahead of his own ambitions.

Like few leaders anywhere, he chose the path of peaceful reconciliation without compromising his values,” he said. Obama lauded Odinga’s example of leadership, noting that his influence stretched beyond Kenya’s borders, inspiring pro-democracy movements across Africa. “Through his life, Raila Odinga set an example not just for Kenyans, but for the world. I know he will be deeply missed,” he added. He concluded his message by extending condolences from himself and former First Lady Michelle Obama to Raila’s family and the people of Kenya.

“Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family and to the people of Kenya,” he said. Raila Odinga, 80, passed away on Wednesday, October 15, while receiving medical treatment in India. He will be laid to rest on Sunday, October 19, at his father’s home in Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, Bondo, during a State funeral expected to draw leaders from across the world.
