Senegal President Diomaye Faye arrives in Kenya ahead of Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitui

Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye arrived in Kenya on Sunday evening from Kigali, ahead of this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, where he will serve as the Chief Guest at the invitation of President William Ruto.

The 44-year-old leader will join Kenyans in honouring the country’s heroes and heroines, individuals who made remarkable contributions to Kenya’s independence and nation-building.

“This visit is part of the ongoing strengthening of friendship and cooperation ties between Senegal and Kenya, two nations united by a common vision of a united, sovereign Africa firmly committed to progress,” the Senegalese Presidency said in a statement.

President Faye’s visit comes at a time when Kenya is mourning the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who was laid to rest in Bondo, Siaya County, on Sunday with full military honours, including a 17-gun salute by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

During his stay, President Faye will also hold bilateral talks with President Ruto at State House, Nairobi, focusing on enhancing political, economic, and Pan-African partnerships between Kenya and Senegal.

The national celebrations will take place at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County, marking a moment of unity and continental solidarity.

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura urged Kenyans to attend the event in large numbers, noting that this year’s Mashujaa Day would also pay tribute to the late Raila Odinga.

“The government calls upon all Kenyans to turn out in great numbers for Mashujaa Day 2025. Let us come together as one people to celebrate the enduring legacy of the Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga and all our mashujaa,” Mwaura said.
