President Ruto posthumously awards Raila Odinga Kenya’s highest civilian honour at Mashujaa Day celebrations

President William Ruto has posthumously conferred the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (C.G.H.) on the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the country’s highest civilian honour.

The recognition was bestowed during the Mashujaa Day celebrations held on Sunday, October 20, 2025, at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County.

The award honours outstanding individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the nation. Raila, who passed away earlier this month, was recognised for his decades-long service to Kenya’s democracy, unity, and governance.

President Ruto described the gesture as a mark of national gratitude to a leader who shaped Kenya’s political and social landscape.

The C.G.H. is traditionally awarded to presidents, heads of state, and distinguished individuals whose leadership and sacrifice have had a lasting impact on the country.

The posthumous honour comes as Kenyans continue to celebrate national heroes and reflect on the legacy of leaders who dedicated their lives to public service.
