Kiambu County cooperative officers trained on fiscal governance to boost Sacco accountability, protect members’ savings and enhance compliance

Cooperative officers from across Kiambu County have completed a three-day fiscal governance training aimed at strengthening Sacco oversight and accountability.

The capacity-building workshop, organized by the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA), was held at the Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology and covered key areas such as financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and digital resilience in the cooperative sector.

Acting SASRA Chief Executive Officer, David Sandagi, said the training seeks to empower county cooperative officers to serve as the “first line of defence” in safeguarding members’ savings and ensuring Sacco stability.

“We aim to establish a strong supervisory structure at the county level. Competent officers are essential in maintaining Sacco integrity and protecting members’ investments,” Sandagi stated.

Participants also received updates on amendments to the Sacco Societies Act and practical guidance on applying International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). They were trained on risk assessment, internal auditing, and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) practices.

Janet Mwangi, a cooperative officer from Juja, described the sessions as timely and impactful. “We gained a deeper understanding of IFRS and how to apply the new compliance standards effectively,” she said.

The training marks a key step in SASRA’s efforts to build a more transparent and well-regulated Sacco environment. Officers are expected to use the knowledge gained to enhance audit quality, improve compliance reporting, and strengthen confidence among Sacco members across the county.
