Kiambu County’s rivers face severe pollution crisis as county launches crackdown on waste dumping and illegal riverbank farming

Kiambu County is grappling with an escalating environmental disaster as its once-pristine rivers turn into polluted channels, threatening the health and livelihoods of millions of residents.

The Nairobi, Ruiru, Kamiti, Gatamaiyu, Thiririka, Ndarugu, and Karura rivers—once central to Kiambu’s ecosystem are now heavily contaminated by indiscriminate dumping and unregulated farming along their banks.

Residents say what were once sources of clean water have become breeding grounds for disease. Grace Wanjiru, a resident of Ruiru Town, recalled how the river has deteriorated over the years.

“Twenty years ago, we could fetch water directly from Ruiru River for domestic use. Now the water is dark, foul-smelling, and full of waste. Our children often fall sick with waterborne diseases,” she said.

Experts warn that the crisis is deepening. Dr. James Kamau, an environmental scientist at the University of Nairobi, said the pollution has dire implications beyond Kiambu.

“These rivers feed into Nairobi’s water system. When we pollute them, we’re contaminating our own water supply. Heavy metals and bacteria in the water can cause cancer, typhoid, and cholera,” he warned.

The pollution stems from two main sources uncontrolled waste disposal and riparian farming. Informal settlements have encroached on riverbanks, channeling raw sewage and solid waste into the rivers. Meanwhile, farming activities have pushed to the water’s edge, allowing fertilizers and pesticides to wash directly into the streams.

In response, the Kiambu County Government has unveiled a raft of measures to reverse the damage. County Environment Executive Sarah Nduta announced plans to create 30-metre buffer zones along major rivers and prohibit farming within those areas.

“We’re launching an aggressive campaign to restore our rivers,” Nduta said. “This includes relocating illegal structures, setting up waste collection points in high-density areas, and holding monthly river clean-up exercises with full community involvement.”

The county also plans to work with chiefs, environmental groups, and residents to enforce the Environmental Management and Coordination Act, which prohibits degradation of water catchment areas. Violators will face prosecution or fines.

However, experts insist that long-term success will depend on addressing underlying causes poverty, weak enforcement, and poor waste management infrastructure. Without sustainable solutions, they warn, pollution could permanently destroy the county’s waterways.

“River restoration isn’t just about enforcement it’s about changing livelihoods and community habits,” Dr. Kamau emphasized.

For now, Kiambu’s rivers remain under threat but residents and officials alike hope the renewed campaign will breathe life back into the dying waterways and secure clean water for future generations.
