Kenya’s First Electric Bus Assembly line launched in Thika by CS Rebecca Miano

In a momentous event that reverberated across the nation, Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade, and Industry, Rebecca Miano, unveiled Kenya’s first-ever electric bus assembly line. The groundbreaking initiative, named BasiGo, promises to revolutionize public transportation and contribute significantly to environmental sustainability.

Located at the Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers (KVM) plant in Thika, BasiGo’s assembly line hummed with anticipation. The air crackled with excitement as government officials, industry leaders, and environmental advocates gathered to witness history unfold.

Rebecca Miano, resplendent in her official attire, stood before the podium. Her words echoed with purpose: “Today, we inaugurate BasiGo’s Electric Bus production line—a testament to Kenya’s commitment to a greener future.

BasiGo achieved a significant milestone earlier in February 2024 when it completed assembly for two E9 Kubwa electric buses. These 9-meter marvels were tailor-made for the Kenyan Public Service Vehicle (PSV) market. Their sleek design, efficient electric drivetrain, and eco-friendly features promised a new era of transportation.

Rebecca Miano emphasized the urgency of combating climate change. “The transportation sector significantly contributes to carbon emissions,” she declared. “Transitioning to electric vehicles offers a sustainable solution to mitigate environmental degradation and counter the adverse impacts of climate change.”

The assembled E9 Kubwa buses, adorned with BasiGo’s logo, stood ready for action. Their lithium-ion batteries silently hummed, waiting to propel passengers across bustling city streets. The government’s commitment to cleaner air and reduced greenhouse gas emissions was palpable.

BasiGo CEO and Co-Founder, Jit Bhattacharya, expressed gratitude to the government. “The shift to clean, electric buses signifies more than just environmental impact,” he said. “It presents Kenya with an opportunity to establish itself as a manufacturing hub for modern EVs and their components.”

As the assembly line buzzed with activity, officials announced that the E9 Kubwa buses would soon enter operation with Citi Hoppa and Super Metro—both transport operators undergoing electrification. Passengers would soon experience the quiet revolution—the whisper of electric motors replacing the roar of diesel engines.
