The government has dissolved 126 companies and warned 392 more over possible deregistration, signalling a fresh wave of job losses at a time Kenya continues to struggle with high unemployment.

In the latest Kenya Gazette, Deputy Registrar of Companies Hiram Gachugi announced that the 126 firms had been formally struck off for failing to meet statutory requirements. The companies span various sectors, including logistics, manufacturing, real estate and retail.

Another 308 firms were listed for imminent closure unless they can prove they are still active. The notice did not provide a definitive timeline, leaving affected proprietors racing to comply.

A separate notice further placed 92 additional companies on a three-month deadline, after which they will be dissolved unless owners show cause.

This brings the total number of companies at risk to 392, raising concerns within the business community and among employees who now face uncertainty.

Just two weeks earlier, the Registrar had named 140 companies facing closure, giving the public three months to challenge the move.

The Business Registration Service reported that in the 2024/25 financial year, 2,260 firms applied to wind up operations, a reflection of the growing strain on businesses.

Kenyan law allows the Registrar to dissolve companies for failing to file annual returns, long periods of inactivity or non-compliance with statutory obligations. Some firms also voluntarily apply for closure when operations are no longer viable.
