Kasipul by-election candidates Philip Aroko, Boyd Were fined Ksh1 million each over campaign-related violence

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has imposed Ksh1 million fines on Kasipul by-election candidates Philip Aroko and Boyd Were after campaign clashes turned violent.

Aroko, running as an Independent, and Were of the ODM party breached the harmonized campaign timetable, a move the Commission says directly escalated tensions between supporters and contributed to fatalities in the constituency.

“The committee placed responsibility squarely on the shoulders of the two candidates, noting that their lack of discipline inflamed tensions instead of guiding supporters toward peaceful engagement,” the IEBC said.

Both candidates have received formal warnings. Aroko must fully comply with the IEBC timetable, while Were is cautioned that future breaches will not be tolerated. The Commission stressed that repeat violations could attract stricter sanctions, including possible disqualification.

Residents and election observers in Kasipul have called for tighter enforcement of campaign rules to ensure voter safety. With the by-election approaching, all eyes are on Aroko and Were to demonstrate discipline, maintain calm, and allow a secure and peaceful electoral process.
