Siaya Governor James Orengo has clarified his recent remarks during the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) 20th anniversary, dismissing claims that he was calling for protests.
In an interview with Ramogi TV on Wednesday, November 19, Orengo said his comments were misinterpreted and that he was only highlighting Kenyans’ right to peaceful demonstrations if the government fails to fulfil its duties.
“Some people think that when I mentioned protests, it meant I would personally lead them. That is not the case. I meant if issues are not addressed properly, citizens can organize lawful demonstrations,” Orengo explained.
Orengo noted that similar remarks had been made by other ODM leaders, including Embakasi MP Babu Owino, yet he appeared singled out for criticism.
His clarification comes days after he warned of potential nationwide protests over governance concerns, including the rising cost of living. Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi responded to the remarks, warning that calls for protests could reopen old political wounds and affect the party’s stability.
The governor emphasized that protests, if necessary, must be orderly and lawful, stressing the importance of dialogue, accountability, and the protection of democratic right
