Nairobi County Assembly launches probe into irregular land allocation to reclaim grabbed public spaces

Nairobi County Assembly is set to debate a motion aimed at tackling irregular land allocation and reclaiming public spaces that have been taken over by private interests. The motion, introduced by Kibra MCA Ochieng’ Jera, calls for a thorough audit of all public land, including parcels designated for schools, hospitals, playgrounds, and markets.

Jera highlighted that unauthorized developments on these plots have left residents without critical services, undermining county efforts to deliver education, health, and sanitation programs. He urged collaboration with the National Land Commission (NLC) to investigate all irregular allocations and recover misused land.

The motion proposes that outcomes of the investigations be publicly shared and presented to national and county institutions for action, emphasizing transparency and accountability. According to Jera, densely populated neighbourhoods are the most affected, where service delivery gaps continue to impact residents’ daily lives.

This initiative comes amid growing concerns over land grabbing in Nairobi, with leaders calling for decisive measures to protect remaining public spaces and ensure urban development aligns with community needs. The County Assembly is expected to consider the proposal in upcoming sessions.
