Nyeri governor Mutahi Kahiga hosts Amref Kenya board to strengthen healthcare, review projects, and tackle rising non-communicable diseases in county

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga on Wednesday welcomed the Amref Kenya Board of Directors and senior leadership for their annual field visit, aimed at reviewing the impact of ongoing health projects and strengthening healthcare delivery across the county.

Accompanied by Deputy Governor David Kinaniri and County Secretary Edward Irungu, the delegation, led by Amref Global CEO Dr. Githinji Gitahi and Board Chair Mette Kjaer, visited key health facilities including Nyeri Town Health Centre, Warazo Jet Rural Health Centre, Karatina Sub-County Hospital, and Kiamabara Health Centre.

The visit focused on assessing the implementation of initiatives addressing the rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes and cancer, which have placed increasing demand on local health services. Amref Kenya’s support in capacity-building, workforce training, and provision of resources has been crucial, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when the county required urgent oxygen supply.

Governor Kahiga praised Nyeri communities for their resilience and innovation in health-related matters, noting that local participation and adherence to health initiatives have contributed to the county achieving some of the highest national health indicators.

“Nyeri continues to lead nationally on health outcomes, with the highest life expectancy at birth and one of the lowest maternal mortality rates in the country. Our partnership with Amref Kenya strengthens our efforts to ensure residents have access to quality healthcare services,” said Kahiga.

The county government dedicates 35% of its budget to the health sector, prioritizing preventive and curative services, while Amref Kenya continues to offer technical support and guidance in managing NCDs and other health challenges.

Officials emphasized that the collaboration ensures sustainable improvements in healthcare delivery, capacity development for medical personnel, and direct engagement with communities to enhance service uptake and health awareness.

The annual board visit also allows Amref Kenya to monitor projects on the ground, gather feedback, and refine interventions to match community needs, ensuring Nyeri residents benefit from strengthened healthcare systems.
