Leo wa Muthende clinches Mbeere North seat in tight UDA victory as IEBC confirms razor-thin results

A tense and highly competitive by-election in Mbeere North has ended with UDA’s Leo wa Muthende declared the new Member of Parliament, following a razor-thin victory that underscored the constituency’s growing political energy.

Wa Muthende secured 15,802 votes, narrowly defeating Democratic Party (DP) candidate Newton Kariuki popularly known as Newton Karish who garnered 15,308 votes, a difference of just under 500 ballots.

The results, released early Friday by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), capped a contest that drew nationwide interest and kept residents glued to the tallying process late into the night. The slim margin reflected the fierce campaign period marked by intense grassroots mobilisation.

Celebrations broke out in Siakago, Mutuobare and Kanyuambora as jubilant supporters lifted the newly elected MP shoulder-high, waving party colours and chanting UDA slogans. Many described the win as a sign of shifting political momentum in Embu County.

Speaking after his victory, Wa Muthende thanked residents for placing their trust in him.

“This win belongs to every voter who believes in a better and more united Mbeere North,” he said, pledging to focus on development and grassroots engagement.

Kariuki conceded defeat gracefully, urging supporters to maintain peace and continue participating actively in democratic processes.

“It was a tight race, and I respect the will of the people. We will keep serving the community in different ways,” he said.

The by-election outcome is now expected to influence political alignments as parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 General Election.
