At least seven people were killed and hundreds of livestock stolen on Friday after suspected bandits launched coordinated attacks across several parts of Meru and neighbouring Isiolo County.
Meru County Peace and Herders Chairman Charles Kamwibua said two people were shot dead in the Igembe region, while five others were killed in Ngaremara, Isiolo, as herders attempted to recover animals driven away during the raids.
The attackers struck multiple locations, stealing more than 400 animals in Igembe before raiding Tigania, where they made away with over 200 livestock. Another evening attack was reported in Maili Saba, Buuri Constituency, deepening fears over rising insecurity in the region.
Local leaders have urged the national government to deploy additional security personnel, enhance patrols, and strengthen intelligence networks to curb the escalating banditry that continues to threaten lives, livelihoods and peace along the Meru–Isiolo border.
