Mombasa records major tourism surge as direct flights and new commuter rail boost arrivals, driving the strongest festive season in years

Mombasa is witnessing a sharp rise in both local and international tourist arrivals as direct flights and the newly launched Mombasa Commuter Railway breathe new life into the Coast’s tourism sector. Hoteliers report full bookings, busy beaches, and a festive season shaping up to be one of the strongest in recent years.

Visitors say the improved transport options have made travel faster, easier, and more affordable. Sarah Thompson, a tourist from the United Kingdom, described the city as “more vibrant than ever,” while Nairobi resident Peter Mwangi praised the commuter railway for delivering him directly into the city centre. Maria Fernandes, another traveller, said direct flights influenced her decision, noting that avoiding a connection through Nairobi made the trip smoother.

Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers (KAHC) CEO Sam Ikwaye said the surge reflects sustained investment in tourism marketing and advocacy for open-air policies to increase direct flights to the Coast. He noted that the campaign is now paying off as arrivals climb sharply.

Hotels are also crediting the commuter railway for boosting traffic into the city. Sapphire Hotel General Manager John Yegon said the service has opened up new opportunities for cultural and city-based tourism, with improved security making guided tours easier to organise.

Mombasa CEC for Tourism Mohamed Osman said direct flights are transforming the county’s fortunes, noting that the airport was previously underutilized despite the city attracting millions of travelers annually.

Tourism stakeholders expect the positive trend to continue into the new year, positioning Mombasa as a top destination for cultural, historical, and beach tourism.
