Government hands over refurbished Gatundu Level 5 Hospital to Kiambu County, boosting UHC and modern service delivery

The national government has handed over the fully refurbished Gatundu Level 5 Hospital to the Kiambu County Government, marking a significant boost to healthcare services and the rollout of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in the region.

The facility, which has undergone major upgrades over the last five years, now features expanded infrastructure, modern medical equipment and increased capacity to handle a wider range of specialised services. The handover fulfils a 2020 Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Health, Kiambu County and the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH).

Speaking during the ceremony, Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr Ouma Oluga said the improved hospital is a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to making quality healthcare accessible and affordable for all Kenyans. He noted that investment in equipment, skilled health workers and reliable financing systems is essential to delivering care without pushing families into financial distress.

Dr Oluga added that the refurbished facility reflects a broader vision for a stronger health sector driven by long-term investment rather than short-term expenditure. He said the government remains focused on ensuring that every Kenyan can access essential health services as a constitutional right, not a privilege.
