Kiambu County Embraces Solar Power, Unveils Ambitious Streetlight Project

In a bold step towards sustainability and financial prudence, Kiambu County has officially adopted solar energy as its primary source of power, unveiling a groundbreaking initiative that includes the installation of 6,000 solar streetlights across the county.

Under the ambitious program titled “Angaza Kiambu”, the county aims to revolutionize its energy infrastructure, starting with the transition of all streetlights to solar power. This move is projected to significantly reduce maintenance costs and eliminate monthly power bills, ultimately saving the county millions of shillings annually.

The decision comes as Kiambu County grapples with exorbitant electricity expenses, currently totaling approximately Sh1 billion per year. Hospitals alone account for over half of this expenditure, consuming upwards of Sh500 million annually, while streetlights contribute a further Sh210 million to the county’s electricity bill.

In an effort to address these staggering costs and mitigate the environmental impact of traditional energy sources, Kiambu County has committed to expanding its solar energy initiative beyond street lighting. The program will gradually encompass health facilities, water projects, county offices, and all other county-owned facilities.

County officials emphasize that while Kiambu is not entirely disconnecting from the national grid managed by Kenya Power, the transition to solar power represents a strategic shift towards renewable energy. By harnessing the abundant solar resources available in the region, the county aims to meet its immediate power needs while laying the groundwork for a sustainable and eco-friendly future.

The unveiling of the 6,000 solar streetlights marks the beginning of a new era for Kiambu, one characterized by clean, renewable energy solutions. As the county progresses with its solar initiative, residents can expect to enjoy the benefits of reduced energy costs, improved environmental stewardship, and enhanced energy reliability.

With “Angaza Kiambu,” the county government is not only investing in the present but also securing a brighter, greener future for generations to come. As solar power becomes increasingly integral to Kiambu’s energy landscape, the county sets a precedent for sustainable development and responsible resource management across Kenya and beyond.
